Synopsis

Every flower matters. Behind its beauty lies an important story of the interaction between plants and insects — a relationship essential to the survival of many species, the diversity of nature, and our food security.

Today, insect pollinators face numerous threats, including the loss of natural habitats, declining food resources, pesticide use, the spread of diseases, and climate change. As flowering meadows, natural habitats, and plant diversity disappear, it becomes increasingly difficult for insects to find sufficient pollen and nectar. Yet their activity is essential for the pollination of many agricultural crops, the productivity of orchards and vegetable gardens, and the reproduction of numerous wild plant species.

But can we make a difference? Absolutely! And we can start right in our own backyard. Plant an apple tree or an ornamental shrub, create a flower garden, set aside a small area for flowering herbs, or enrich your garden with plants that bloom at different times of the year. Choose them so that, from early spring to late autumn, bees and other pollinators can find accessible sources of pollen and nectar.

At the same time, nectar-producing plants can transform an ordinary homestead into a special place—vibrant, colourful, and full of life. Flowering trees, fragrant herbs, colourful perennials, and ornamental shrubs beautify the grounds, create a welcoming atmosphere, and bring the joy of observing nature. Here, beauty and practical value do not conflict; instead, they complement one another.

Ukraine is home to a rich diversity of nectar-producing and ornamental plants, offering numerous opportunities to create a pollinator-friendly environment. This book aims to help you choose suitable plants, combine them into harmonious arrangements, and make your own homestead not only beautiful but also beneficial to nature.

May every homestead become a small, flowering sanctuary for life. May bees buzz in our gardens, butterflies flutter above the flowers, and every spring bring new blossoms and renewed hope. By planting today, we care not only for the beauty of our own gardens but also for a future in which the richness and diversity of the natural world will continue to thrive.
